New Oral Flea Treatment: Comfortis

January 7, 2015

Comfortis oral flea treatment for dogs and cats is available from your veterinarianThose of you that were disappointed to find out that Program was no longer available in Canada will be happy to know that there is a new oral flea treatment available. It is called Comfortis and is manufactured and distributed by Elanco. Like most flea treatment products, Comfortis is designed to be used monthly and has proven effective in killing adult fleas for 30 days. Studies have shown that Comfortis starts killing fleas in as little as 30 minutes and is 100% effective on the day following treatment.

For more information on fleas, their life cycle, and some of the other flea treatments available, please visit our previous post, How to Treat Fleas.

Comfortis' easy to deliver beef-flavored chew tablet should appeal to those who find it easier to administer than the topical treatments. Pet owners who are sensitive to some fragrances associated with topical treatments, or who prefer not to handle, or risk their children coming into contact with pesticides, will also appreciate the alternative delivery method of Comfortis. And although both Advantage and Revolution are touted as being waterproof or water-resistant to varying degrees, some have found that their efficacy lacking when used on dogs who are regularly in the water. Comfortis solves all of these problems.

The effective ingredient in Comfortis is Spinosad. Spinosad is a relatively recently discovered, organic antiparasitic which is derived from a naturally occurring soil microbe produced during the fermentation of specific compounds. Spinosad is also used a pesticide in organic farming.

Like Revolution, Comfortis is a prescription drug, which means that we need to have an active file on your pet and have seen him or her within the last year in order to dispense it. Comfortis comes in a boxes of six, and we are now dispensing it in individual doses, so you can buy one at a time. This is ideal if you want to try it out before committing to a six-month supply, and is also great for puppies, for whom we may need to review dosage as they grow.

For more information on Comfortis, or to inquire about whether it is right for your pet, please call or stop by the Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital.
