James Kirkham, DVM, Owner

Dr. James Kirkham is the co-owner of Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital with his wife Dr. Alex Kirkham. James was raised in Squamish, BC and has a love for Canada’s west coast. He completed his Bachelor of Sciences with Distinction at the University of British Columbia. He went on to complete his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012, graduating at the top of his class and was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal for highest academic achievement.

James has a professional interest in diagnostic imaging, dentistry, internal medicine and preventive care.

In his free time he enjoys kayaking, skiing, hiking, camping and has more recently taken up motorcycling and scuba diving.

Alexandra Kirkham, DVM, Owner

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dr. Alex Kirkham knew from a very young age that being a veterinarian was her life calling. She attended the University of Manitoba and received her Bachelor of Sciences degree. Alex completed her veterinary studies at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She has a special interest in small animal surgery, dentistry, dermatology and feline medicine.

Alex has many non-veterinary interests and struggles to find enough time for them all. She enjoys reading all types of books, knitting, drawing and painting. She also enjoys being active with her family by getting outside kayaking, hiking, camping, skiing and recently learned to scuba dive. She adores her cat, Dexter, and will tell you all about him, including how he loves her husband, James, more than her!

Laura Aedy, DVM, Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Laura Aedy grew up in southern Ontario in the Niagara Region.  She obtained her DVM at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph.  After a visit to Vancouver Island, she fell head-over-heels for the mountains and decided to move across the country to Nanaimo.  She joined Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital in August, 2017.  Laura enjoys all aspects of private practice but her special interests include preventative medicine, pharmacology and soft tissue surgery.  Outside of work, Laura enjoys yoga, cycling and spending time with her two dogs-Billy and Marnie.

Brett Hayward, DVM

Dr. Brett Hayward received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from The University of Saskatchewan in 1983.  After that, he founded the Puntledge Veterinary Clinic in Courtenay and ran that for 12 years. At Puntledge, he not only cared for small companion animals, but also horses. After selling Puntledge, he studied cancer for about five years, which involved doing stints at the University of South Carolina and Minnesota State.

Dr. Hayward's personal work is with the homeless, many of whom struggle with mental difficulties and sometimes drug problems. He runs his own transition house with the Vancouver Island Health Authority, serves on the board of Island Crisis Care Society, which runs five shelters, and occasionally serves breakfast at the 7-10 club. For fun, he enjoys motorbiking and paragliding, travel, music, good food, books, books, books, and the occasional beer.
